The Good Shepherd Prayer Group

After Pope John Paul’s visit to Ireland in 1979 when he urged Priests to help the Laity become more active in their parishes; our prayer group came into being through the initiative of a Priest, a Religious Sister and three lay people. The second Vatican Council documents issued for the teaching formation and inclusion of the Laity were its foundation root; these documents were later confirmed through our new Catholic Catechism teaching.

At that Vatican Council  sought the Holy Spirit through prayer, the prayer group through the intersession of Mary, seeks and asks the Holy Spirit we received at Baptism and Confirmation to be released in us with the gifts and fruits of the Spirit for our own spiritual growth, and the supernatural Charisms or service gifts given by God for the up-building of the community our Church.

From its small beginnings and early struggles the group has grown and has been a great source of grace and help to many in need. It moved to The Good Shepherd Church conference room when it was made available and has settled there. The prayer of praise always and everywhere called for in the Holy Mass is taught and practised, as it is a great aid to growing in trust and relationship with God.

There are special nights set aside for healing in Spirit Mind and Body including the healing of life’s hurts, painful memories, and overcoming defects, and other intentions; one of these nights is special before the Blessed Sacrament exposed.  Special commissioned prayer teams are also available each night after the prayer meetings to pray for peoples confidential intentions.

There is reflection on Scripture and the Sacraments as well as Spirit guided spontaneous prayer for all needs and intentions. To encourage and promote devotion to the Holy Spirit and Church Renewal our group has several outreaches and programmes through the year in Lent and Advent with the Holy Spirit Seminars at various different times.

There are special days of prayer teaching and healing when appropriate and an evening in November for our deceased and the comfort and healing of our bereaved. A confidential telephone prayer helpline has been set up for peoples needs; over 100 people pray daily for the requested intentions. The group is part of the worldwide renewal movement that has come into being after the second Vatican Council that has renewed the faith of millions worldwide. It has been supported by our Popes since then.
